??'s about shrink tube over cork

I recently picked up a used rod with some diamond pattern heat shrink over the cork, only really had 1 chance to fish it this year ( 8-12# 9'6" ) for springers with bobber n eggs. Anyhow it felt just fine in hand though it was a dry July day, ie no rain, hands not wet.
I was thinking of doing the same to a few of the boat rods ( SH plug rods and the rod I use for Salmon). My questions are:
Is there a downside to this ?
Will mold of other S*&^% grow under the heat shrink ?
Is one material better than the other ? for slipperyness or abrasion resistance.

Pro's and Con's appreciated.

I know several folks that use it with no apparent consequences. I would like to do many of my rods with it, but have not found a good local source of the 1.5 inch shrink tubing.

I'm not looking for the x pattern stuff, but just regular 3M simple shrink tubing. Norvac used to sell it, but they are now gone. I hear rumors that Platt has it, but haven't made it over there yet. I need about 30ft or so.

Anyone have a good Portland source, or should I just order it online?

Been using the flocked tubing for sometime now and really like it. No complaints other than it's like expensive.

Mudd Hole has regular shrink tube, they call it Quick Grip. Only problem when you get to 1.5" dia. the price jumps alot. I would think any local eletrical parts store should have shrink tube.

I use it on all 41 of my rods except for those I only use for throwing spinners / spoons. No water gets underneath as long as you cut the tube long enough. I have never had an issue with molding. Egg, herring, and scents clean off much easier and when trolling the rods come out of the holder smother.
Because go through rods, I buy mine by the roll. Here is a link. http://www.skycraftsurplus.com/heatshrink40mm75rollblack.aspx

Fish Geek, the non-flocked shrink wrap is available on line from various sources. I have some on hand that comes from Merrick Tackle called quick grip. Comes in two flavors, with or without heat activated adhesive. If you want to take a look at this material drop me a pm and I'll be glad to show you some of it. This material is thicker than X Flock and I've been using it on foregrips on long range heavy tuna rail rods.

I had no idea Norvac closed, I was just there a little while ago.

Regular flocked wrap is available on-line from Anglers Workshop, Mudhole and other on line rod building vendor sites. Some new colors are available other than black. My current favorite is black with red x's.

It is recommended that you seal the cork with some sort of sealer to retard water, it is also recommended that you apply a spray on adhesive on the cork.

Check this thread on the rod builders forum on some how to's on installing X Flock
