So is that for Halibut, shrimp or both? Are there a lot of Oregon boats that have been blown off our waters?

Halibut...headed for PA, Sequim, Neah and La Push. I had planned for LP opener today, but pushed it out due to some heavy swell action passing through on first day. Hoping I don't see pics posted tonight showing glass out there. Looks like the wind may have dropped a shade below forecast, but it was windy as all get out here in Everett last night. Hope it passed thru before boats were on the water this morning, and everyone is safe out there.

If I walk the driveway out to the county road and look north, I am looking across the 36 bank to the rockpile. Around 10:00 I saw one boat on the 36 bank. Did not have the binocs so I could not tell what was on the rockpile.

Made a run to the east side safeway at around 11:30, saw a few boats 24 to 26 ft headed east on 101, methinks they limited early.

Weather is outstanding today.

Early is my choice also if "my" tides/currents are right.

First Halibut I caught here was in 1977. Back when we had a long halibut season, my how things have changed!

Left the ramp at 5 AM, Dropped bait over the side 20 minutes later in the Green Point area. I had two hard pulls befoe the sinker found bottom. 20 minutes later had a 105 pounder tail roped to a cleat. Pure luck, I dropped in right over where the halibut was laying on the bottom. Then played with a spinning reel and a Buzz Bomb and put two blackmouth in the box. Back at the ramp at 6:30, at the house before 7AM.

And it was not a hailbut rig by NW standards: Penn 209, cheap 7 foot boat rod with roller tip, 30 pound dacron, 6 oz sliding sinker on the main line, single 9/0 J-hook, 4 feet of 60 pound mono for a leader. Fishing in 60 feet of water, no halibut live in shallow water, right? Bait was a Albertson's squid.

Pretty fun trip, all by myself, had fun trying to get a rope on the halibut single handed! I have a photo somewhere, will have to scan it and post.

my poor gaffing cost us what appeared to be a 60#er this AM. might need a 410 in the boat!

After the first one I made a flying gaff, billfish style. Use a 16/0 shark hook. 6 foot handle and 1/4 inch nylon rope.

Beat a harpoon, never lost one. The key is to never pull the fish out of the water until the flying gaff hook is seated well and a tail rope is on. Cinch the gaff hook rope to a cleat, then tail rope.

Little ones (30 pounds or so and under) I just netted or grabbed the leader and swung the butt into the fish box. If you put them white side up in the fish box they will not flop around. Fish box should have a lid so it is dark inside.

I never felt good about firearms on a boat, too many folks scurring around and the probability for a ricochet off the water is very real.

woodhunter was just waxing poetic about better fishing days gone by fishbear........and i enjoyed it!
the conditions were absolutely abysmal last weekend. everyone should just fish halibut out of Newport/Depoe fosho....terrible, terrible i say! PA Rockpile Sat 5/12:

barchaser, check yer pinpoint forecast for this coming weekend now............
we boated a chicken (15ish?)and a ping pong paddle (10ish). first butt ever for one buddy, first in the Strait for the other. several other buddy boats got much nicer fish last weekend.........

gpt, thanks very much for all the info and reports, mucho appreciated!! nice ride you got there, bummer about your gaff mishap........

at 1100 today there were 92 trailers at ediz hook with rigs loaded and leaving as i was driving out to take a look. boat haven W parking lot was full and there were about 2 dozen trailers parked along the road. get there really early if you plan on launching in either place.
