with our last 2 steer killed in WY by wolves, fish-n-game asked for video proof next time. they didn't compensate us. about 4 lbs of wolf scat, and all vertebrae were separated (takes multiple animales to do that).
we did get compensation on the 4 yr old cow killed by a griz, though. we found it in our pond, pulled it out, and they skinned it to see if the bite marks on the neck, belly, and hind quarters happened before or after it was dead. bruising under the hide confirmed the bear did the deed.
but how/why did the cow go into the pond? only thing we can figure is it was trying to escape. we also think it was a smaller bear - the big ones simply run along side and smack the head, breaking the neck.
sorry to hijack...
seems compensation is going to get more and more difficult because 'proof' requirements will rise.
