Steheken
Last year in November my better half and me went to Steheken for our 34th Anniversary. We went for a bike ride from the lodge to the school and found these tracks. There were two sets, two different cats. I don't know why it doesn't show but there was also lots of blood. The locals thanked us for notifying them of what we saw. The cats sneak down out of the hill looking for house cats and guard dogs, which no doubt was the prey we were looking at. .
What a beautiful place this is:

Re: Steheken
Hard to tell from the picture, but looks like canine tracks to me, at least the left track, looks like toe nails.

Re: Steheken
Hard for me to tell except the paws would have to be a St. Bernard and possible the Blood and the meaty pieces I saw laying around were mis-leading.
So what leads you to believe it is Canine Rank ?

My Chessy lays a bigger track than that.
Its always hard to tell for sure from a single track in a pic. Its better to be there and see all the supporting evidence that goes with the track.

Re: Steheken
Abalone,
On our elk hunt I seen some tracks in the mud identical to those. Ment to go back and take pics, but forgot.
The pointed claws were clearly visable. I don't think they were cat tracks IMHO.
And no labs or chessies in there. I'm pretty sure I know what the were....but I'm not one to cry ****.
Ok, so I am.

That's funny.. After Rank Accusted me of being full of Balogna, I showed the photo's to a fellow I know that used to trap. He looked at that photo and said Timber ****.
I better call Stehegen and let them know they got problems.
BTW did I tell you my wife is 6 feet 6 inches tall and has huge hands ?......

Re: Steheken
I see some of the other guys are on to this already.
Canine.
Doesn't necessarily mean wolf .... there's at least one hybrid running around St Helens that I see his tracks most winters. Still haven't got a good picture of him yet but I did get these of this big guy(s) last year. Not your everyday coyote is it. I suspect by the size of your tracks that dog is almost twice the size of this ...

Re: Steheken
Sorry Abalone, the pointed/ toenails of that left track looks canine, but the right hand track doesn't show toenails. Actually a wolf and cat track are very similar, but toenails is a dead give away to canines, or at least that is what I have been told. Looking at Chesapeake's examples they are hard to tell apart, with the exception of the toenails.
It may not be toenails that we are seeing though, maybe just how the foot entered the snow. I agree, I would have to look at the tracks further to really know.

Re: Steheken
first thing i thought was wolf. don't think the cats have toenails showing, unless they need to be.
