Re: SE Alaska house and Cabin Rental
Looks nice. Coffman Cove is a neet little logging camp (or it used to be). Grayling on POW? Intersting, I never knew. Luck lake, Eagle creek ???
I would recomend POW to anybody. Its a sportsmans paradise for sure.

Re: SE Alaska house and Cabin Rental
Bill, There is a link on our site to a recreational rental biz up there that rents skiffs. I also spoke with a few local boat owners who plan to have boats available, and I am trying to line up one to leave for our guests. Just need to work out the liability details.
Thanks,
Brad

Re: SE Alaska house and Cabin Rental
I'm like Bill (do-it-yourselfer) and a 16 foot skiff doesn't seem adequate for a day of fishing on the saltwater (salmon, bottm fish...)? What are your thoughts on the minimum requirements for the salt up there. I've done an 18 footer with 45hp in Sitka and that's about as small as I think I'd want to rent.
Also, any other stories or hot-spot tips to whet our appatites? I'm headed up on the ferry system at the end of August and I'm planning on hitting POW for a couple of days.

Re: SE Alaska house and Cabin Rental
Bounty hunter,
There is alot of good sheltered water in close, and great fishing a short ride off the dock. You should never have to venture more than a few miles.
Most of the locals fish from 16' skiffs. Granted, you'll have to use common sense if the wind kicks up and such, but there are alternatives for fishing if the seas get too rough. There are good charters available, and another lodge that I'm working with which had offered to rent his 19' boats.
Drop me a PM if you'd like and I can share more info.
Also, I plan on providing a big report when I return in mid July. I already can't sleep at night with anticipation.

Re: SE Alaska house and Cabin Rental
Looks like you had a good time. Sounds like you need a harpoon for the big flat fish.
A 16 foot skiff would be plenty to fish the Inside passage. Of course you would need to watch the weather.

Re: SE Alaska house and Cabin Rental
there are no brown near on POW. The black bear hunting is absolutely outstanding! I believe he island boasts the highest black bear population in alaska. The Sitka blacktail hunting is tops too, as well as good waterfowl.
We had guests last thanksgiving and they bagged three bucks in two days.

Coffman Cove. southwest from wrangell. Across the straight.
They put in a ferry terminal two years ago, som now you can take a ferry from wrangell to CC direct. Super convenient!

Re: SE Alaska house and Cabin Rental
lots of bears taken in the last few weeks. A hard long winter with deep snow, so the bears where late this year. We heard of some taken and met a large group on the ferry back that went 4-5.
Good bear hunting up there, and the fall sitka blacktail hunting is superb!
150 n0n-res tag gets you 4 deer!
I'm off tomorrow for Coffman with my dad and son. A great fathers day will be had. Should be very special!
Will try and post a report and some pics.

Re: SE Alaska house and Cabin Rental
When I get back from Iraq I would love to have the chance to go there. I fished out of Silver king lodge on a small island just North of Ketchican before. We used 14 ft livingston and had no troubles getting around.
Are there options for bringing my truck and boat up on the ferry system? I have a chevy sliverado and a 22 ft Rogue Jet.

Re: SE Alaska house and Cabin Rental
you bet, we have folks bring a rig and boat up and just say in the cabin.
That works well too, just takes a few extra days to get up and back, and I am not sure it it saves money or not, but having a nice bigger boat to go anywhere you want is nice. There is so much water to fish nearby, it boggles the mind.

If you look at a map, you will see that Sitka is ocean water, and POW is inside water - BIG DIFFERENCE.
Used to fish POW quite nicely in a 12' boat, as do many others up there.

Re: SE Alaska house and Cabin Rental
very true. There are days when it blows hard and there is some big swell, but that's far from the norm. Most of the fishing fleet are 16' skiffs. plus we fish about a mile from the dock, and around islands. So getting back is a breeze.

this is very true I have fished up at Brad's and I can tell you the boat is absolutely safe for those conditions. I have had the luxury of fishing allot of S.E and Sitka is a totaly different beast then coffman. Send me a P/M and I can fill you in on some areas to look at up at Brads and giveeyou some tips for planning a trip up!. But if your concerened about the boat dont be it is a great, stable, absolutely safe vessle for that area.

Re: SE Alaska house and Cabin Rental
good reports from our group the last few days. They found a learning curve but are in the zone now! The anchored up and landed halibut from 100-70lbs, some nice silvers and a few big nooks.
the bagged some huge crab today, and were nibbling on oysters on the deck when I called. All having a great time.

Re: SE Alaska house and Cabin Rental
most buy groceries in ketchikan, then take over with the car on the ferry, or fly over to the island, with a car waiting and swing by a grocery store.
there is a good big grocery store en route to the cabins. also a general store right in coffman cove a 5 minute walk from the cabin with all the basics you might need, including food items and tackle, gas, etc. also a bar and liquor store in in coffman cove.

This is an awesome place to go! My wife and I just got back from a week there, and we did the rental car/ferry option. Like mentioned - there is a large Safeway just down from the ferry terminal in Ketchikan. Just figure on items being about 30 - 50% higher than down here.

Re: SE Alaska house and Cabin Rental
well you are looking at two days travel each way, and about 1500 in total ferry charges. You could drive through canada and ferry from Prince rupert to ketchikan, then ketchikan to prince of wales island. We've had a few customers do it. If you have the time, it's probably not much more to bring your boat than daily rentals. you have the flexibility to fish more water with a bigger boat. The amoutn of protected water to fish out of coffman is staggering if you can travel. we have good fishing close within a mile. but if you are willing to go 5-10 to explore, it's crazy good.

Re: SE Alaska house and Cabin Rental
yes there is a really cool marina with fish cleaning station, covered, water hoses and cutting boards. Boats are kept on a skid dock at the marina.
The small town of coffman has two gas pumps, general store, liquor store and bar (it's alaska) library with free internet access. there are also a few small lodges in town, and 3-4 charters. Everything you'd need.

I had always said the same thing...."one of these days", until late last summer. I booked a week at Salmon Shores for the first part of August this year. It's a chore trying to schedule cabin rentals, car rentals, charter services, motel reservations in Ketchikan, ferry reservations and airline reservations so that they are all synchronized. I'm glad I started early as everything has finally fallen into place....can't wait.
I researched a lot of lodges and cabin rentals and by far you get the most 'bang for your buck' at Salmon Shores. Excellent accommodations, sheltered water and super fishing. Brad and Meridith have been very helpful with information other than their cabin and boat rentals... they do go the extra mile.
