I am going in April/May.

I started my research a month ago and found a couple of threads here about it.

I have decided to fish with Captain Don. There are not a lot of charters on the island compared the other islands. The fishing is great because you drop off into super deep water right out of the marinas so that don't have to go far. Don said we'd head up the coast around the NW side. He lets you keep enough fish to feed your group for your trip but keeps the rest. He will only allow you to keep meat from the smaller fish under 30 to 60 lbs depending on how the fishing is because the markets cannot take fish that have been cut. If you ONLY catch big fish, he will arrange to have the market get you some of the fish that you caught. He seems like a straight shooter from my phone call with him.

I haven't heard or read any bad reviews about any of the others though.

Just remember that you don't typically get to keep your catch in HI. Make sure you work out any details BEFORE you pay for your trip no matter who you fish with.

Have fun and please report back about who you fish with!

I did a little bit of north shore fishing back in October - caught some cornetfish, wrasse and lizardfish casting crappie jigs.

I kayaked a couple rivers on the north shore - Kalihiwai and Kilauea. I regret not getting the inexpensive freshwater fishing license as I heard both of these rivers had smallmouth, tilapia and mullet. I also saw a guy catching and releasing some smallmouth on a smaller stream to the west of Kapaa.
