Default Royal Red Crab

What exactly are they. They are sold at Safeway but when asked, they don't know either. Nothing on google. They don't look like any crab I've seen.

Saw those as well. My guess is that they are blue king crab (turns red when cooked). Technically still "king crab" but I think I'll pass.

Opilio, snow, tanner.

All the same critter. Use to be considered third-rate. A rose is a rose is a rose....

Although C. opilio and C. bairdi are discreet species, they are able to crossbreed. In fact, there are specific regions in the Bering See and North Pacific Ocean that contain high numbers of Tanner crab hybrids. The hybrid individuals display a mix of physical traits that are typically attributed to either of the two discreet species.

I believe what they have is a Santolla Crab from Sount America. There are several varieties. I was offered them and passed.

Betting its from Chile..

"Red crab meat" used a lot by restaurants, and it mainly comes from Chile.

Its not bad for crab cakes, burritos, etc..

Smile Re: Royal Red Crab

So called Royal Red Crab is a southern hemisphere King blue crab, (red when cooked) mostly from chile and Argentina. We just made some crab cakes from a blend of these and opilio crab legs.

Here they are:

Royal Red Crab at the top, Snow Crab at the bottom. ~♥~
