Line capacity on the 300 is a bit of a issue. Had a couple kings recently, take a lot of line up in alaska. It was too the point where my buddy thought he was gonna get spooled. Had to chase em down with the boat. Use braid and fill that spool as full as you can. Just for piece of mind.

You must have been into some brusers. It will hold 200+ yards of 50# braid.

The lami is nice... the 300LC is great for springers but It has only 12lbs of drag so yo might have issues at B10 if the tide is ripping... the 500LC has 18lbs of drag...

Some around 30# and we were using 65# tuff line so we got about 150 ish yards. I love the 300s but you have to think about capacity. I have a couple of the 500s too and prefer them in larger water. The Kanektok, where we were fishing, is fairly shallow and the fish just flat out LEAVE when hooked.

I don't think we were ever REALLY in danger of being spooled but it did make my partner nervous seeing the spool empty the way it did.

jaunt up a step to the 600 if you fear spooling your 500. The Shimano 600 tekota drag works REAL well with sturgeon and I've never come close to getting spooled with it.

That is the setup I run for troll and back bouncing. A 500LC and a lami 934 is a GREAT combo for river fishing. Dragging divers against the current makes it look loaded but there is plenty of pole to yank one up if you wanted to use it in the big pond.

The better option would be an XCC 802 w an Abu garcia Revo Toro 50/51

I like the loomis SAMR1084C, with a tekota 600LC, 500LC or the calcutta 400TE.

The Best ??
Bad word choice.
Pages of great combo's, the "Best" meaning singular is opinion based.

I have Loomis rods but my $89.00 15 year old HMG seems to catch the most fish.... so is it the best ? I am sure you dont mean to use the term "best" literally, just expect personal opinions for answers is all I am saying.

Lamiglas and Shimino have had very good reliable products for years - I love their stuff ! I want a leftie Tekota when they come out !

Good luck !

It was the 300 getting "spooled" not the 500. If I start getting my 500s spooled I'm in trouble.

I have been replacing line on my 300lc's with 65# power pro (for B-10) and set the line counter to see what they would hold and it's closer to 250yds than 150yds.

I have the 300 and 30 lb braid, I dont see any reason to get heaver line with only 14 lbs of drag. I dont think that reel could break my 30 lb test.

Good info. Thanks. I'll put more tension on the line and see if I can pack more in. Don't want to overload though. I do love the feel of the 300 vs the 500.

I think you are off

I'm not calling you a liar I think it must be due to an error associated with the line counter. I beleive line counters are only accurate when the spool is full of line... for example let's say a reel retreives 24 inches of line with each crank of the handle when spool is full... when the spool is empty, spool diameter gets smaller and you retreive less line with every crank of the handle. Line counters however are gear driven so they don't have a way of distingwishing between full and empty spool. They always assume 24" of line is retreived with each crank. That's why you think you have more line on the spool than you actually have.

BTW specs for a 300LC say 205 yds of 50lb braid, so for 65lb, you can expect around 185 yds. It would be interesting to see a comparison between a line counter reading and an actual capacity though...

I agree but they still give you a consistent guide it may say you are 120 feet out and you may only be out 100. But you are out the same distance you caught your last fish at which is most important!

A 500lc is a big ass reel for steelhead. Do you try and skip them across the surface like crappie?

500lc has a smooth drag and super fast to keep up with those hot steelies. Tribs i run a 201 curado but no clicker for when i am not paying attention. Also lots of chinook come in the pursuit of steel.

I think you are pretty close here. I too, didn't want to call BS on the numbers given previously. What I did was take a 150 yd spool of 65# tuffline and reel it on to my 300s' There wasn't much room left on it so I feel the 185 you are quoting is fairly accurate. I think you are right about the line counter and had thought the same thing, relative to spool size.

I found this on a Tecota 300LC box

"*line capacity indicated is approximate and for guidance purpose only. Line capacity can be influenced by many factors including line tension & diameter, tension etc."

But I do wonder how accurate the line counter is now that you mention it. Especially on the first half of the spool when it is at it's smallest. But since capacity is in mono, I am sure the braid is packing in a lot tighter than mono and 225-250yds is close.

With about 10 yards of 30# dacron backing, I can still squeeze about 160 yards of 65# Tuff on my 300s. Mark your line counter spool and pull off some line. The counter counts the revolutions on the spool no matter if the spool is full or you are on your last turn. But with a full spool, there is about one foot of line out per revolution. Gee folks. AM I the only one who actually measured this...

I don't want to be a I fish BS guy so I did an experiment. (I can't believe I took the time but what the hell.)
1)I took a 300lc out of the box.
2)Got out a 1500yd role of 65# power pro.
3)Tied on the line to the stud and put a 1" piece of electrical tape over the knot and wound on 3ft to start.
4)Set the counter and marked 3ft on the line with a sharpie
5)I reeled to the mark and the line counter went from 000-992 (that is 8' on the counter for the first yard!
6)When the counter got to 600 I again marked 1yd and reeled to the mark and the counter went to 597.
7) I put line on till 375 on the counter and checked it again. This time the 1yd mark went from 375-372 1/2 on the counter.

000-372.5=627.5ft = 209 yards plus the first 3ft = 210yds

210yds - BS line readings on all 10 of my Takota LC'S = around 185yds of 16# diameter like the box says!!

Ok I take back the 225 - 250 yds capacity.

Good man!!

When I put my braid on, I use a leather glove and enough pressure to probably crush the spool. I don't have much room left after reeling on the 150 yd spool. I think the 180-190 is about right.

OK........ next topic?

Put a twelve pound weight on the end of your line and lift it a few times. Then tell me you actually pull on a steelhead or chinook that hard.

Sweet

Thanks for checking into it

Nope. I use 8 lb leader but what does your statement have to do with rod/reel combos???? Do you own a 934?????? Super soft and progressive action helps keep nice constant pressure on the fish while smooth drags dont bind under a fast long run. Maybe you should try it???
