Frustrated With Savage Arms
They seem to have caught the same disease that Ruger has. They come up with a fantastic product, advertise and market it fiercely. They get rave reviews on the product because they got it into the hands of those in the know and who can help promote the product. The magazines and reviews come out raving about the product. Yet it's now where to be found....not on shelves ANYWHERE at least in Oregon. Ruger did this with their SR1911 - you couldn't even put your hands on one before ordering.
Now, Savage is in the same situation with their 111 Lightweight Hunter rifle. Lots of promotion, excellent reviews, yet there are none to be found on shelves. They are certainly available for special order. But once your order it, it's yours.
May I just don't shop guns enough to know - is this typically the way of the gun business?
Oh, and whatever you do, DO NOT call a certain gun shop in SE Portland asking for one of these.....

Re: Frustrated With Savage Arms
I think firearms mfrs in general are having trouble keeping up with demand. I was in Sportsmans Warehouse in Medford, and they seemed to have a pretty good selection of Savage rifles.
They do make a good product for the money. I have a Model 116 that is the most accurate rifle I've ever owned

Actually, I'm not convinced that's the issue. A gun dealer down the street from me confirmed that he can have on in his shop within 4 working days. They are available, but stores aren't putting them on their shelves.
Pretty odd considering the 11/111 LWH rifles got excellent reviews: http://www.americanrifleman.org/arti...hunter-rifles/
Maybe this should be entitled "frustrated with gun retailers" or "....with gun distributors" or just "frustrated I can't find a 111 LWH to put my hands on to see if I like it or not."

Unfortunately, yes, as a rule this is how the gun business works. I've been in the industry for decades and if you think it frustrates you, understand that you are not alone. Actually though, Savage delivers better than many, even on new product.
And, as Grantspastor mentions, all gun factories are scrambling to keep up, so that makes it even more difficult for all concerned. That said, I know one distributor that has a few in stock now.

Right. But if I placed a special order for it from a gun shop, I basically own it without opportunity to handle, check for fit, inspect, etc....at least that's what I've been told.

That is the discretion of the gun shop owner. Some are more customer friendly than others.
Since this is new and since they are getting at least one call for it, I would think a gun shop would order one and put on their shelf if you didn't take it, but, that is just me. It is a fairly high ticket gun and if times are tough, I can understand a shop not wanting to tie up those inventory dollars..
BTW, on this particular issue, it seems to me that your frustration would be more on point if it were directed towards retailers not stocking this, rather than on Savage Arms. As mentioned, these are available from at least one regional distributor.

I would kindly refer you to the last line in Post #3 above.
